Phishing messages using IOTA’s name

IOTA is a non-profit non-governmental organisation that works with tax authorities to help them improve the way they operate.

IOTA is not affiliated to the EU and it is not responsible for collection of any taxes or duties from individuals or businesses. Therefore if you receive an email, letter, text, or any other form of communication claiming to be from IOTA and it contains:

  • Unexpected demands or requests for payment or some form of tax return; and/or
  • Links to payment sites; and/or
  • Requests for any personal information, such as bank details, home address, date of birth, etc; and/or
  • Offers of a refund, rebate, or grant; and/or
  • A QR code; and/or
  • Attempts to rush you into clicking any links in the message or replying;

Then this is highly likely to be a scam. Do not click on any links, do not send any money, do not reply to the message and do not give the sender any personal information. Instead, please report the message to your country’s own authorities.

Below are examples of scam messages that we are aware of that use IOTA’s name.

Remember that IOTA is not responsible for any taxes or collection of money that may relate to any tax, or similar, obligations. We will also never threaten legal action for failure to pay any form of tax or other national obligations and we will never threaten to arrest somebody for failure to comply with any obligations. If you are not sure whether or not a message that claims to be from IOTA is genuine, ask us first at [email protected] and do not click on any links or reply to the sender of the message.
